Ainchase "Ain" Ishmael![]() First Impressions
Ain appears friendly, if quiet. More of an observer than an actor, he rarely speaks, and his expressions tend to be difficult to read. Getting into his head is a nigh-impossible task. He seems to always smile despite the circumstances, as if his face naturally rests in that position. Yet at times, he grows visibly nervous — though that grin he usually dons might do well enough to mask it.
Tall and somewhat-difficult to miss thanks to that giant cowlick of his, Ain can only be described as "someone who doesn't know how to dress himself", considering that he doesn't wear his jacket properly, even in the worst weather. That, or it's all some weird fashion statement. Or it could be both. He carries around a pendulum, though he rarely uses it as a weapon. In fact, his abilities are difficult to decipher upon first glance due to their rather esoteric nature. He is without a doubt a magic user of some calibre, utilizing projection-based magic which creates three coloured lights of red, blue, and yellow. What each of these does is a mystery. Info
An angel sent by the Goddess Ishmael to restore the balance of the world, Ain is an enigmatic man known for his dedication to his friends and mission — whatever that may be at the time. Finding value in humans due to spending the last five years of his life surrounded by them and the confusing lives they lead has led him on the path to becoming more "human" than "angel", though these newfound feelings are not without strife; Ain at many times is confused and lost trying to navigate the world from a human perspective, and harbours a great deal of anxiety on top of this. This anxiety is mostly caused by the fact that he doesn't understand the new emotions he's experiencing, as well as the fact that he is very, very concerned about those close to him at all times. He may, on occasion, inquire as to if these feelings are "normal" to have in a given situation. As Ain doesn't have the vocabulary or emotional competency to understand feelings more complex than "happy", "sad", or "angry", he will instead describe his feelings as a physical sensation. For example, "anxiety" according to him feels akin to drowning.
The path leading up to Ain deciding that he liked humans and that he wanted to become more like them was certainly not an easy one, though. At first, his mission from Ishmael was only to restore the El — a large crystal responsible for maintaining all life on Elrios — by any means necessary. When he initially went to do this, he wound up trapped within Henir — a silent, unending void — for 500 years, where his pure energy was tainted by the darkness, giving him a distinct scar over his left eye only when he takes on his angel form. This corruption actually wound up being a good thing for him in the end, as it carved a path for him to develop emotions; without it, he would've gone down a completely different path and likely died trying to restore the El. After his escape from Henir, Ain met with a group of people searching for the shattered remains of the El, on a similar mission as he was supposed to be, and joined up with them for the purposes of furthering his mission... where he then developed loyalty and friendship with the group's ever-expanding members over the course of five years. Naturally, those five years weren't spent in total peace, as not only did Ain spend a great chunk of time trying to decipher what makes humans human (such as wondering why they feel the need to help each other so much even if it's inconvenient) but he also spent that entire time travelling from battleground to battleground to battleground. Even after restoring the El, the battles didn't stop. It would seem that, as far as wars go, there's no end in sight. Sordid, tireless history aside, Ain is a fairly quiet individual, not speaking unless spoken to more often than not. Sometimes, he may feel the need to speak to point something out. At other times, Ain can be incredibly sarcastic, usually making jabs at others with a characteristic soft smile. He tends to be the least bit difficult to read, given that he's not inclined to share his emotions save for having to ask if they're "okay to have", as well as the fact that he has very few facial expressions. He's introspective, spending a great deal of time thinking especially about how others act and drawing comparisons. On the surface and due to his lack of understanding about "human" things and his constant, unreadable smiles, he may seem rather airheaded and ditzy, and might even lie to appear more aloof than he really is. Inside, however, is a man who constantly analyzes and assesses, much more observant and analytical than he'll dare let on. As he is incredibly loyal to his friends, once Ain finds people he likes, he glues himself to their side. Given Ain's tendency to latch onto others in this way, he functions better in a group of close companions than he does on his own. He has a deep-seated fear of being forgotten or left behind due to his nature as an angel where, up until about a year ago in his canon, if Ain left the immediate area everyone who he had spoken to would forget he existed entirely. Coming back would restore their memories, but it was still detrimental on him psychologically. While he's aware of the fact nowadays that people don't just forget he exists, that fear certainly contributes to how anxiously clingy he can be at times. Charmingly, or perhaps obnoxiously, Ain rarely ever refers to others by their names, instead giving them what he thinks is an apt nickname typically based on their race, background, or otherwise. Examples include "Ms. Knight Captain" or "Ms. Elf". He will do this regardless of social standing. Yes, he knows that person's name. Yes, he's choosing to give them a different name. No, he won't stop. Given that he is an angel, Ain has an instinctual hatred toward demons, and will be outwardly aggressive toward them. It's one of few moments where he isn't simply a "friendly bystander". In addition, he may come across as defensive and standoffish to those he distrusts, and much of this may be hidden behind a thin layer of sarcasm as well. It is possible for anyone, including demons, to get on his good side, but it will take time should they start off on the wrong foot. Abilities & Inventory
SPIRITUALISM: Ain's more "angelic" form. In this form, he is weightless and is able to float upon the air. Being in this form slightly augments his magic, but it is tiring to maintain; he will shift back to his regular human-esque form within a few minutes.
PENDULUM:Ain carries around a pendulum which he draws in combat. The pendulum itself, however, is never used as a weapon, and functions as a rather decorative arcane focus. EDEL EIDS: The tri-coloured, glowing glyphs that swirl around Ain give him various abilities, including augmenting some of his magic and healing. In particular: ♦Mut: Augments Ain's magic, making his attacks hit harder. ♦Rein: Gives Ain's magic regenerative properties, making him able to heal. This healing is extremely limited in that it can only heal physical injuries, and slowly at that; it cannot regenerate lost body parts, cure illnesses or diseases, or revive the dead. ♦Wille: Increases the attack range of Ain's magic while also being able to sometimes slow the enemy down with ice magic. These two effects are not stackable with one another. When in combat, Ain often prefers to use Wille's slowing abilities. The big problem with the Edel Eids is that... gameplay-wise, not every skill follows that exact function. The skill Requiem for example, when augmented by Rein, turns the spell into an AOE that fires two large beams, and when augmented by Mut it makes a vortex. In general, though, the above is true. OTHER MAGIC: There are four different wiki pages that detail exactly how his skills/magic ingame work (scroll down to the "Skill Tree" blurb on the page if you choose to peruse here; clicking the icon brings you to a video of the skill if applicable). Much of Ain's magic can be described as "area of effect" spells. Ain is definitely more of a "support caster" than someone who would be seen on the front lines, and is a somewhat mediocre performer in hand-to-hand combat. That being said, he can summon a glasslike sword and similarly-styled spears, although they're actually green and not blue (this is the clearest possible image I can use because the game is crunchy). He also possesses some minor wind magic to boot, sort of a "jack of all trades, master of none" situation. |
